CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A competitive race is forming to see who will replace U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in Congress and Dorchester County Councilman Jay Byars believes he’s the man for the job.

After 14 years of representing the people of Dorchester County, Byars says he’s ready to start tackling the problems of the First Congressional District by building bridges, not burning them.

“Nancy does things very differently than I do. I think we have someone who is adept at burning bridges to get results or perceive results. I’m a bridge builder,” Byars said. “We work well with everyone. You build bridges to get results; that’s what I do. I’m not about the drama. I’m not about going up there and trying to embarrass someone. I’m going to work with anybody who will help make our life better. That’s what our job is. Our job is to go up there and to make our life better. Not to go up there for social media.”

The top issues on his agenda are fixing roads, restoring civility on Capitol Hill and ensuring the financial success of the next generation. He says that starts with someone in Congress willing to fight for federal dollars to address crumbling infrastructure.
